Following the release of their 2001 debut album, “Cold Veins,” the Harlem indie-rap mashup of Vast Aire and Vordul Mega (known only as Cannibal Ox) basked in almost resoundingly positive reviews. This first studio release captured the cold and depressing face of New York poverty with stomach-punching lyrics and subtly pervasive production. Even with acquiring an instant wave of fans, Cannibal Ox fell off the map and into the shadows for an extensive period of time.

Now, after nearly a decade of radio silence, Can Ox resurfaced by announcing a Brooklyn comeback show and their intent to finally release a follow up of their debut album. Production of the album was first announced in 2012, amidst settled rumors of a falling out between artists.

On the contrary, “Vordul and I make music all the time,” Vast Aire said in an interview with Pitchfork, following the first announcement that production was underway. “We always wanted to make another full-length [album], but… We weren’t gonna be peer-pressured into doing it.”

After facing initial trouble getting production off the ground in the new arena of hip-hop, Cannibal Ox launched an independent Kickstarter campaign. They started with a lofty goal of raising $30,000 to produce the new album, and fell short, raising just under $6,000.

Taking the road blocks in stride, Cannibal Ox is finally back on tour, 14 years after the release Cold Veins. The tour celebrates and hypes the release of their sophomore album, “Blade of the Ronin,” set to debut March 3 under iHipHop Distribution.

Cannibal Ox may have waited to break their silence, but their iconic and zap-ready lyrics still hit with every verse in their most recent EP, “Gotham,” released in 2013, and early singles off of “Blade of the Ronan” are promising to pull the same magic.

To quote Can Ox: “On the real, “Blade of the Ronan” is gonna shut everything down.”

Cannibal Ox will be performing at Mr. Smalls on Friday, March 6 at 8 PM, just three days after “Blade of the Ronan” hits shelves. Special guests include Crimson Godz, Dos Noun & BZE, Hubbs, Fortified Phonetx. Tickets are available here
