The Pittsburgh Vegan Festival
If you’re not familiar with vegan diets, you might be thinking it’s all made up of phony-bologna. But vegan food is so much more than that in dozens of delicious ways. Consider attending this event, which highlights the benefits of a healthy, environmentally and ethically-conscious diet on Saturday, July 19 from 5-9PM at the Pittsburgh Vegan Festival. This family-friendly event is gathering some of the best local vegan vendors and cooks at the Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church in the North Side to show off what they’ve got to curious omnivores and seasoned vegans alike.
Keep your eyes out for places such as Vegan ABC, known for tasty faux-meats like Apple Cider BBQ Pulled “Pork” and “Chicken” Salad. They’re also sensitive to food intolerances, offering gluten-free Buffalo “Chicken” and gluten-free and soy-free chili options. TCBY Brentwood is going to be offering almond milk frozen yogurt and a secret sorbet flavor. Ethical dog treats by animal lovers like the folks at Beagle Bites Bakery will be up for grabs as well.
They won’t just be offering food, though. You can look forward to bellydancing by Amethyst’s Pittsburgh Bellydance (who’s also hosting the event!) among other performances and products for an environmentally-friendly lifestyle, like local eco-enthusiast Loving Tree, who makes crafty products out of fair trade and repurposed supplies. With this green spirit in mind, the organizers ask anyone who attends to think ahead and bring reusable dishes to eat with and reusable bags to shop with. If you show these reusables upon entering the event, you’ll have a free ticket to enter and win a prize.
There’s plenty of activities for kids, as well, like story telling, face painting, and caricatures. Keep in mind that everything at the event–even the face paints–will be vegan. Unfortunately, no pets are allowed to attend with you. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and door prizes, too. For more information about all the vendors and activities, check out the meet-up page for more info.
Before Saturday’s event, you can check out the kick-off party to a vegan weekend at Fitness with a Twist in the South Side. This event is fairly exclusive with only 35 spots available, so check out this page for more information if you’re interested in attending.
