Last fall, talents collided at Pgh’s first installment of Layer Cake Music Fest, an immersive gathering of local artists and musicians in the 412. This year’s edition will be held at multiple venues with acts spanning across the realm of genres–from raunchy, reckless garage punk, to wavy indie pop sounds, and melodic rock. Be sure to catch live painting sets that’ll compliment music performances from the talented lineup of artists on board. TRAF returns to the ‘Burgh this summer for 10 full days of music and art happening citywide. This year’s highlights include heavy hitters Michael Franti & Spearhead headlining the Dollar Bank Stage; the Juried Visual Art Exhibition at the Trust Arts Center; CREATE Fest’s 2016 Featured Artist Jesse Best, who’ll be displaying her Multiverse Wall project on Gateway Lawn, and much more! This summer, local Pittsburgh artists will explore a diverse range of topics through a common medium – the collage – in the coming exhibition, “New Order: Collage Now.” This Friday, check out the opening reception of Future Tenant‘s month-long exhibit which features eight local artists, many of whose works are influenced and inspired by Pittsburgh culture. Each artist takes on his own perspective, uniting under the medium of the collage to shatter conventions, layer textures, and combine jarring ideas to tell new stories.

Join Workshop PGH to kick off your weekend with Tiny Little Pricks–an art show featuring all things plant. This special monthly First Friday party includes interactive DIY art with terrarium making and watercolor painting of cactuses and succulents. Guests can also stick around afterwards to enjoy herb based cocktails and refreshments in the garage with a few awesome vendors and future teachers selling handmade and vintage wares. Tickets for Workshop’s Sweet Peaches/DIY brunch on Saturday will also be up for grabs!

An exploration of the human condition in the new millennium, YOU/U is a group show of installations that incorporate sculpture, sound, and digital technologies to create interactive experiences in a gallery setting. Curated by mixed media artist Ben Quint-Glick and papercutting sculptor Gianna PaniaguaYOU/U questions the ways that emerging technologies are incorporated into our environment–either by will or necessity–and the effects they have on our identity. The exhibition will run until June 26 at UnSmoke.

Stop by Spirit to shop, sell and swap various types of effects pedals and handmade gear–including synths, amps and cables–at the third edition of Pittsburgh Pedal Swap. Vendors and builders are encouraged to rent a table to sell or demonstrate their wares; and those planning to trade up their gear can bring a pedal or two to the Swap area during the event. Pizza and refreshments will be available in the downstairs portion of Spirit, and all ages are welcome.
