Pittsburgh Rock Music Awards
The third annual Pittsburgh Rock Music Awards take place this Friday, February 8 at Mr. Smalls and is gearing up to make this year’s ceremony unforgettable. Produced by Asperity Music Group, the PRMA aims to “create a sense of community and pride in our thriving local music scene by empowering musicians to nominate one another to win an award in over 20 different categories pertaining to local rock music”. Asperity’s model is focused on grassroots community involvement that avoids cutthroat competition and instead fosters an environment that encourages recognition and peer engagement, in addition to highlighting bands who might not otherwise be noticed. According to them, “this is accomplished by a two-part process which gives more weight to the votes of the musicians in the community and the panel of judges, rather than pushing ticket sales on the competing bands, or a general popularity contest”. Winning bands receive a variety of perks, including prize packages, trophies and plaques, management services from Asperity Records and general bragging rights!
After an initial round of nominations, the second round was “open only to the nominated musicians and the judging panel, which gives the local musicians a chance to check out other bands in their genre as well as other genres, creating a sense of camaraderie within the community.” Musicians’ votes count as 5 points, with one vote per band. Judges votes count as 10 points. The first round of nominations were valued at 1 point each.
Prizes for this year were donated from the likes of Treelady Studios, custom guitar and bass setups from Beardly Customs, Videography packages from Eyes to the Sky films, as well as gift certificates and more.
Hosted by local jazz performer Phat Man Dee, this year’s event also features a 80s hair metal/glam rock ‘best dressed’ competition, so dressing up is highly encouraged. There will also be live performances from 2011’s “Best Alternative Rock Band” Fist Fight in the Parking Lot, as well as Dazzletine, Todd Christian of Once Nothing and DJ Donnelly.
Tickets are $12 and can be purchased here ($15 at the door). Doors open at 6PM and the event starts at 7. Best of luck to all of this year’s nominees!
