Mattress Factory 35th Anniversary
Happy Birthday Mattress Factory! One of our favorite museums in Pittsburgh, and certainly one of the most innovative, the Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art is celebrating 35 years of engaging installation art. Founded in 1977 on the North Side, the museum has renovated nine properties to host installation space, artists residency quarters, artistic gardens, and public and educational spaces throughout their community. The museum hosts 17 permanent installations including the famous Yayoi Kusama Infinity Dots Mirrored Room, and James Turrell’s Pleiades piece, which requires trust and patience to experience. Over the past 35 years they have hosted 500 different artist exhibitions, as well as their not to miss annual Urban Garden Party fundraiser.
Join them to celebrate all they have done for the Pittsburgh art community today for their 35th Anniversary Bash featuring a Community Party from 1-4pm, followed by Tom Sarver’s Art Olympic Theatre from 5-7pm. The Community Party will be a family affair where you can design your own party crowns, make scribble machines, go on a gallery scavenger hunt, share your favorite Mattress Factory memories, create a commemorative screen print, and eat some anniversary cake. Admission to the museum and party today are “pay as you wish”.
After the party, feast your eyes on the spectacular Tom Sarver Art Olympic Theatre, where teams of artists will ‘compete’ to build unique installation pieces right before your eyes. Team leaders include Julia Cahill, Nina Marie Barbuto and Christiane Leach. Enjoy food and drinks, audience participation games and music while you watch the works of art evolve. Admission is $20 (or $10 for museum members). So get on over to the North Side now to support this iconic Pittsburgh institution!
