Honcho Kickoff Party with Gay Marvine
Pittsburgh’s hottest and newest underground dance party highlighting queer DJs and dance music, Honcho, kicks off this Saturday night at Hot Mass. The newly-named downtown club space has transformed from a raw, underutilized series of rooms to an accommodating, bumpin’ place to rage until the wee hours of the morn. Honcho takes place every first Saturday of the month and begins at midnight – two hours before the usual after hours ruckus. The LGBTQ community and its allies are invited to attend this sexy, sweaty hap, which is fully equipped with an LED wall to grind on.
According to them, “Honcho’s goal is to fill the empty void in Pittsburgh as the only party focused on highlighting the underground queer DJs and dance music scenes emerging across the world. Every month you’ll get to meet and party with people digging in to their respective cities – working towards the same goal as Honcho: to reconnect gay culture with it’s rich history in pioneering dance music.” Earlier this month they hosted a warm up featuring Harry Cross from Chicago, the co-founder of “Men’s Room” at Wang’s Gentleman’s Lounge (and it’s exactly what you think it would be – steamy, sweaty, and sexy). Honcho recreated that vibe flawlessly, and we’re hoping Saturday’s kick off turns it up a notch.
Saturday’s guest is none other than Gay Marvine, an underground Detroit DJ who has been invited to play at parties hosted by Richie Hawtin and has shared a bill with the likes of Detroit veterans Derrick May, Juan Atkins, DWynn, and Stacey Pullen. His given name is Chuck Hampton, and he’s been throwin down since ’92, which is longer than most of us have been able to drive. Prepare to be schooled on everything from House, Acid, Techno, New Wave, Industrial, Hi-NRG and *gasp* even Classic Rock. For now, disco will have to do.
It all pops off this Saturday, February 2 at midnight. $10 will get you in. Bring your own booze if you’re so inclined. Don’t forget to bring a towel 🙂
