Experience the Art of Tease at Burlypicks International Burlesque Competition
Lita D’Vargas, Dolly Rotten, Pookie Pseu, Ruby Ruckus, and Boom Boom Bridgette are just a few local Burlesque entertainers appearing in the Burlypicks Pennsylvania Regional-International Burlesque and Variety Arts competition. These women know how to dance, tease, and play with feathers, boas, and the hearts of their audience in ways you can’t imagine. They know how to make you gawk and squirm, entice you with mystery, and surprise you with tricks. Presented by Kat de Lac and Burlesque Bitch, the annual competition features entertainers beyond traditional burlesque to include stripteasers, dancers, musicians, magicians, comedians, aerialists, jugglers, clowns, slideshow acts, drag acts, and more.
These ladies are the secret spice of Pittsburgh’s entertainment scene. Pookie Pseu (pictured right) is a singer, dancer, actor, and model. She’s also costume designer and stage crew member of the Steel City Kitty Burlesque and Variety Show, the number one monthly burlesque show in Pittsburgh. Pookie Pseu also owns Pseudohearts Boutique, which sells new and gently used vintage clothes, shoes, and accessories. She studied Industrial/Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
Ruby Ruckus has long been part of the local Burlesque scene, and according to Facebook, went to “Booty Shakin’ High,” so you can imagine how well she’s mastered that skill. Earlier this month, she performed at “Bumps, Grinds, & Yinz Burlesque,” a benefit show for the Burlesque Hall of Fame Museum in Las Vegas. She started her act covered in black and blue balloons like a bundle of grapes. As the dance escalated, she popped each balloon with a feathered needle until there was nothing on her creme colored body but bedazzled pink lingerie. The benefit was held at the well-known drag show venue, Cattivo, and produced by internationally recognized male vaudeville burlesque performer, Smokin’ McQueen, who will also be one of three judges for the Burlypicks competition. We’re more than excited to see what she’ll bring to the stage at Burlypicks.
Also at “Bumps, Grinds, & Yinz Burlesque” was Lita D’Vargas, who teased the audience with a sparkly white umbrella. Lita D’Vargas is a GoGo Dancer and Burlesque entertainer at CAVO Restaurant Lounge and Nightclub, and a model for Kabarett Vulgare, a local traveling Oddities Show with fire-eaters, sword swallowers, glass walkers, and vaudeville.
More acts to see at Burlypicks include Boom Boom Bridgette, a busty burlesque dancer full of fire, and Dolly Rotten, a trained ballerina and master of pointe, jazz, hip hop, tap, ballroom, and Latin dancing. Both Boom Boom Bridgette and Dolly Rotten are members of Steel City Cabaret, exhibiting fresh takes on the art of tease. Many of the burlesque entertainers in Pittsburgh Burlypicks attended the Steel City Burlesque Academy, which means we can expect some great local talent.
The event takes place on Friday, March 20 at South Side’s Rex Theater. Doors open at 8PM and the show goes on at 9PM. General admission tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For just $25, you can purchase VIP tickets, which include immediate entrance, front row seats, a couple extra tickets free of charge, the raffle, and goodie bags from Kat de Lac and Burlesque Bitch. Those are some sweet VIP benefits; but tickets are limited, so get ’em fast!
Guest musical performance will be The Bessemers, a local rockabilly band.
