BOOM Concepts Grand Opening
D.S. Kinsel and Julie Mallis are two of Pittsburgh’s most vibrant and talented local artists. The imprint their passion is making on the scene is undeniable, and their latest endeavor, BOOM Concepts, finds the pair collaborating with some of the city’s other best and brightest. In addition to being a community center, educational facility, art gallery and performance space, BOOM Concepts is now hosting Jenesis Magazine, Thomas Agnew’s seasoned project on-par with other online cultural publications.
This collaborative space has received funding from The Heinz Endowments. Senior Program Officer Justin Laing states, “This effort has already brought a different energy to Penn Avenue, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.” They’ve joined an array of other galleries and event spaces in the Penn Avenue Arts Corridor, a community that is helping to revive Garfield despite its troubled past and perma-construction that’s left the street a complete eyesore. Supporting these businesses during this crucial time is essential to the neighborhood’s success, and so, opening a space as ambitious as this project is super impressive given these challenging circumstances. They’ve been lucky enough to have the support of neighbors like Assemble, Most Wanted Fine Art, and others.
They’re celebrating their grand opening weekend this upcoming Thursday and Friday during the holiday. The gallery will be participating in the Unblurred art crawl on Thursday, July 3rd while giving onsite studio tours and hosting five endorsed artists. Friday, July 4th they’ll be hosting a barbecue from 6-11PM to raise funds for the space. Activities include musical performances from Rashad A. Henderson and Anqwenique, free massages from Dave Rosenberg of Christine Frechard Gallery, treats from Sweet Little Eats by Briana Jackson and other surprises. It’s only $5 to eat and includes a complimentary drink. You can find BOOM at 5139 Penn Avenue. Celebrate Independence Day by supporting a great cause!
